How the winter weather goes in Southern California is something that’s hard to predict from year to year. There are times when New Year’s Day can have a high of 85 degrees. But sometimes—as in this year—we can wake up to temperatures down in the mid-40s. True, other parts of the country might laugh at the idea that this is a “cold winter,” but it’s our cold winter and we have to find ways to deal with it, Southern California-style.
How is your home’s heating system doing this unusually cold winter? It may be taking on work that it isn’t accustomed to, and this can lead to the need for repairs.
The heater simply can’t keep up
If you turn on your furnace or heat pump and hear it running, but the home still feels drafty like an icicle, there might be a number of things wrong. If you’ve used your heater rarely during the past few years, the trouble could be that the heater is sized incorrectly for the house: it’s producing heat, but not enough to either fill the space or replace heat that’s escaping through the walls and other air leaks. (Many So. Cal homes have inadequate insulation.)
In most cases, it’s best to have the heater replaced with a new one; call professionals to handle the task so you won’t end up with another wrong-sized heater. And since we’re on the topic, we recommend improving the insulation as well if that’s part of the trouble. (Along with heating services, we also provide insulation services.)
The heater is unevenly heating
Are some parts of the house toasty warm, while others feel cold? These cold spots often indicate a heater that has a malfunction keeping it from distributing heating to all the parts of the house that require it. It can also mean ductwork trouble, where heated air is getting out of holes in the ducts and not reaching certain room vents. Our technicians are both heating repair experts and ductwork sealing technicians—we’ll take care of whatever ails your heater and HVAC system.
