We understand that one of the biggest household emergencies you might face during a hot Southern California summer is a cooling system that just won’t cool. Whether your air conditioner is only sending out room temperature air or it won’t turn on at all, you’ll want to have the problem remedied as soon as possible. Often this means making a call to AC repair professionals like the ones on our team.
However, you can take a number of troubleshooting steps first before calling for help. You may not be able to fix the problem yourself, but these steps will help you better understand what’s wrong, and that makes the repair technicians’ job easier.
Check if the condenser is running
The condenser is the outside cabinet of the AC that houses the compressor and releases heat to the outdoors. If the condenser isn’t running, check to see if the unit is still hooked to its power source. Then go back inside and check on the circuit breaker panel to see if any have breakers tripped. Reset any tripped breakers, then try the air conditioner again. If the AC comes back on, but soon after trips the circuit breaker again, you probably have an electrical problem that will require professionals.
Work with the thermostat
If you’re receiving airflow from the vents, but the air isn’t cooled, lower the thermostat by 5° and see if this makes the compressor turn on. Also make sure that the thermostat hasn’t been programmed incorrectly.
Replace the air filter
If there’s air coming from the vents, but it seems both warm and sluggish, then the problem may be a clogged air filter. Take out the filter and change it for a new one, and make sure that you do this every one to three months for the rest of the time that you regularly use the air conditioner.
If none of these steps solves the problem, we recommend you shut down the system and call on our repair experts.
