Can we talk about air quality? Los Angeles is famous for its smog and it’s come to our attention that some of our customers think the purpose of the air filter in their furnace is to keep the air in their home clean for their family’s lungs. It’s NOT! Air in your home is about 30% dirtier than the air outside. Dust, dirt, pollen, dander, pet fur and cooking oils are all floating around the air in your home. You can see the particulates in a ray of light coming through the window. But you won’t be able to tell by changes in air quality whether the air filter needs to be changed. Trust us, it does. Even if the air doesn’t seem any dirtier than it was 3 months ago.
The filter is there to protect the furnace, not you. Your HVAC system will process zillions of cubic feet of air during it’s lifetime and just as eating right and exercising keeps your body healthy and strong, feeding filtered air to your furnace will keep it working well for years to come. There are tons of delicate complex parts inside of the furnace that need to remain clean to work effectively. The thinnest layer of dirt on an evaporative coil dramatically reduces the energy-efficiency of your home comfort system. There are also moving parts inside your furnace that are lubricated. Dirt build-up in the lubricant causes unnecessary strain on the equipment.
There are special air purifiers that can be installed as part of your heating and cooling system that do an amazing job of cleaning the air for your family. We’ve had really exciting experiences of improved health with those products. If you want to find out more about how we can improve the air quality for your family give us a call (818) 446-2099.
In the meantime keep changing that filter. Your furnace will show it’s appreciation with lower electric bills and a longer life.
