condensation

If you listen closely to the sounds that come from your home’s air conditioning system when it is running, you will occasionally hear the patter of dripping water. This is a standard sound from an AC and indicates the removal of condensation moisture from the interior cabinet. If you air conditioner is not suffering from any malfunctions, you should never see any of that water escape from the cabinet and start dripping out on the floor.

If you should notice water leaking out of your air conditioner, don’t simply ignore it, or do some stopgap measures like placing a bucket under it. This requires the work of professional repair technicians.

Why this leaking is happening

There are a number of different reasons for condensation moisture in an AC to start leaking out of the system. Here are the few of the major ones:

  • Clogged condensate drain: The water that forms along the evaporator coil (moisture from the air drawn to the coil during the cooling process) drips down into a shallow pan below. A pump removes it out a drain. But this drain can develop clogs like any other drain, usually because of algal growth. The condensate pan is shallow enough that it will rapidly overflow when this happens.
  • Loose condensate pan: Corrosion can sometimes cause the condensate pan to come loose from the drain. Should this happen, water will leak right out the bottom of the pan and into the house.
  • Broken condensate pump: A special pump pulls the water out of the pan and into the wastewater system. If this should suffer a mechanical failure, it will have the same effect as a clogged drain, sending an overflow of water out of the pan.
